Big Wins Propel Boitan and Corley to Player of the Week Honors

IRVING, Texas — After picking up major wins, Baylor’s Adrian Boitan and Oklahoma’s Ivana Corley received Big 12 Tennis Player of the Week honors. The merit marks the third weekly honor for the OU women, second in a row, and the first of the season for the Baylor men.

At 2021 ITA All-American, Boitan went a combined 5-0 on the doubles and singles courts as the Bears picked up wins over No. 9 Texas, Tulsa and No. 7 Virginia. Boitan paired up with Tadeas Paroulek in doubles to clinch the doubles point against the Longhorns, 7-5. He then took on No. 20 Micah Braswell, who was player of the week on Feb. 1, giving the Bears the victory on the top court with a 6-0, 6-3 win.

Over the weekend, Boitan and Paroulek put the Bears on the board against Tulsa, defeating Daniel Siddall and Tom Therwall-Jones 6-2 and also picked up a win against Virginia’s Jeffery van der Schulenburg and Jackson Allen, 6-4. Boitan grabbed a tough win against Tulsa’s Kody Pearson, 7-6 (4), 6-3.

During Baylor’s attendance record-setting match against the Cavaliers, Boitan battled with No. 30 Inaki Montes de la Torre on the top court, trailing in the tiebreaker 4-6, 6-6 (2-5), when teammate Sven Lah clinched the victory for the Bears.

Meanwhile, Corley led the Sooners to a historic run at the Women’s ITA National Indoor Championships which Oklahoma finished as the runner-up, falling 4-2 to the defending title holders, No. 2 North Carolina. Ranked No. 57 on the singles court and No. 11 in doubles with her sister and teammate Carmen Corley, Ivana went 8-0 during the tournament.

The Corleys opened the weekend with a 6-4 win over Wisconsin’s Xinyu Cai and Alina Mukhortova and followed it up with a 6-3 victory over No. 1 Texas’ Kylie Collins and Sabina Zeynalova. The duo picked up back-to-back ranked wins on the doubles court, defeating No. 5 Pepperdine’s 15th-ranked pair of Lisa Zaar and Victoria Flores, 6-4, and then taking down No. 1 Fiona Crawley and Elizabeth Scotty, 6 -3, in the title match with UNC.

On the singles court, Ivana competed in the No. 3 spot of the lineup, defeating Mukhortova 6-3, 6-1 in the match against Wisconsin. She then pulled off a tough battle with Longhorn Charlotte Chavatipon to grab a 7-6 (7-3), 6-2 win. The senior completed consecutive upsets on the singles court with victories over No. 34 Flores, 4-6, 6-2, 6-1, and No. 7 Reilly Tran (UNC), 6-2, 4-6, 6-4 to become the only Sooner to go undefeated in the Championship, dropping just two sets.

Neither Oklahoma nor Baylor will have time for a break as the Sooners host No. 10 USC on Feb. 20 and the Bears travel to Seattle for the Men’s ITA National Indoor Championship.
